BACKGROUND

In the early 1970s after studying science and nursing at RUTGERS and Cornell University, Dr Ellen Kamhi went on a spiritual quest to delve into the healing power of indigenous cultures which took her to many areas of the world. She spent time in Spain in the Pyrenees Mountains with gypsy people and studied Flamenco dancing, and spent two years under the tutelage of Sonia, a curandera, in southern Mexico. During her sojourns with Sonia, she learned about the energetic understanding of plants.

Other trips have taken Ellen to Costa Rica, where she interacted with the country people who regularly use herbs in daily life, and into the bush country of Florida.

Dr Eugene Zampieron, ND (DrZ) has also been scanning the remote hills, mountains and rainforest of the tropics for decades, uncovering the miraculous powers of the indigenous people who tap the Ancient Forest and Bush as a resource for Herbal cures.

As a young biology student, DrZ traveled with his classmates to the remote regions of the island of Jamaica in St Mary Parish. There he met and befriended a Maroon Elder and Medicine Man Named Lloyd Jamba Scott. After spending much time in Jamaica returning again and again, DrZ fell in love with Jamaican music roots and culture.

While in Jamaica pursuing a graduate-level research course over winter recess, DrZ fell ill with a terrible case of dysentery. He tried mainstream medicine, which created a myriad of side effects without helping his condition.

Feeling weak and depleted, DrZ approached Jamba and one of his Elder Bush doctors, Pop a Top, for help and health advice. DrZ traveled daily with Pop-A- top into the rainforest to pick herbs in a secret matter and make the decoction. For 3 days, he received tea made from ferns, allspice, guava, seagrape, cerasee and many other Secret Maroon herbs. The tea worked where mainstream medicine didn’t, which piqued DrZ’s interest in plant medicine.

Rekindling his interest in herbal medicine, DrZ changed the course of his life and pursued the path of the Healer within himself, something that was instilled a long time ago but was repressed because of the loss of faith in conventional medicine. He left Marine Science and began to read all he could about the subject of ethnobotany, the cultural, traditional and spiritual aspects of how people use plants for healing, food, and in their daily lives.

He asked Jamba if he could become his apprentice, an outsider wanting to learn the mystical ways of The Maroons.

After graduating from Naturopathic Medical School with his doctorate, the rainforest and the Bush country of Jamaica became the ideal place for DrZ, a modern medicine man, to study with Jamba, documenting these experiences on film and taped interviews with Jamba.

He and Dr Kamhi formed www.EcoToursforCures.com

https://www.facebook.com/ecotoursforcuresjamaica
to bring scores of people over the last 30 years to Jamaica to study the rainforest herbs.
