On today’s show, host Ellen Kamhi Ph.D., RN, RH(AHG), AHN-BC interviewed Nathaniel Altman about his latest book The Genealogy of Plant Foods: The Spiritual, Nutritional, and Medicinal Power of the Foods That Sustain Us – explores the history, migration, and health benefits of over 100 plant foods. It details how ancestral foods like avocados, lentils, and grains have shaped human health, culture, and medicine.

Nathaniel Altman is a Brooklyn-based writer who has authored more than twenty books on diet, alternative healing, metaphysics and relationship. His books include Eating for Life: A Book About Vegetarianism,  and Healing Springs: The Ultimate Guide to Taking the Waters , among many others.   

Nathaniel has appeared on more than 150 podcasts, radio and television programs in the United States, Canada, Europe and Latin America, and his articles have appeared in a variety of publications, including Good Housekeeping, Natural Health, Well Being, Free Spirit, Vegetarian Times and USA Today.

Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179), an ancient herbalist and a Benedictine Nun who is considered to be the founder of scientific natural history in Germany. Through mystical visions, psychic impressions and observation of nature, she developed a system of natural therapies, using food, gemstones, and medicinal herbs. In this presentation, we will investigate her recommendations based on diagnosis, prognosis, and treatments which combined physical treatment with holistic methods centered on “spiritual healing”, including the application of tinctures, herbs, and precious stones, recognizing that the four elements (fire, air, water, and earth), the four seasons, the four humors, the four zones of the earth, and the four major winds must be kept in balance. We will also review the modern Scientific Validation that supports the continued use of her methods.
