On today’s show, host Ellen Kamhi Ph.D., RN, RH(AHG), AHN-BC interviewed Nathaniel Altman about his latest book The Genealogy of Plant Foods: The Spiritual, Nutritional, and Medicinal Power of the Foods That Sustain Us – explores the history, migration, and health benefits of over 100 plant foods. It details how ancestral foods like avocados, lentils, and grains have shaped human health, culture, and medicine.

Nathaniel Altman is a Brooklyn-based writer who has authored more than twenty books on diet, alternative healing, metaphysics and relationship. His books include Eating for Life: A Book About Vegetarianism,  and Healing Springs: The Ultimate Guide to Taking the Waters , among many others.   

Nathaniel has appeared on more than 150 podcasts, radio and television programs in the United States, Canada, Europe and Latin America, and his articles have appeared in a variety of publications, including Good Housekeeping, Natural Health, Well Being, Free Spirit, Vegetarian Times and USA Today.

Hosts Ellen Kamhi, PhD RN, and Dr. Eugene Zampieron, ND, MH, discussed the ancient healing herbal traditions of Samhain. Now called Halloween, Samhain is one of the oldest holidays with origins dating back to an ancient Celtic festival, which heralded summer’s end on October 31st. – and brought in the New Year on November 1st.

The Celtic people believed all laws of space and time were suspended during this time, allowing the spirit world to intermingle with the living. In addition to many sacred traditions, herbal medicine was part of the milieu, which led to modern practices, such as bobbing for apples, and beliefs about garlic warding off evil, Lavender dispelling negativity, and St. John’s wort casting out devils. We will explore these and other ancient Druid traditions.
