A Fellow of Britain’s National Institute of Medical Herbalists, David Hoffmann has been a phytotherapist for 45 years.

Graduating in Biological Science from Sussex University in 1973, and after clinical training became a member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists 1978. He was ‘elevated’ to fellowship of the Institute in 1995.

After moving to the US in 1986 he joined the faculty of the California School of Herbal Studies. He was one of the 12 founding members and a past president of the American Herbalist Guild.

The author of 14 books, translated into 9 languages, such as The Holistic Herbal and Medical Herbalism. A peripatetic teacher to herb schools, as well as academic institutions, and frequent presenter at conferences throughout the English speaking world. In 2004 he joined Traditional Medicinals as formulator and Principal Scientist, retiring in 2020,

An activist his whole life, he ran for parliament in the UK for the Green Party in 1983. So, after being a clinical phytotherapist forever, he now has finally discovered the garden and that he is actually an herbalist!

Hildegard of Bingen’s Book of Divine Works: With Letters and Songs

This 8 month study group hosted by Ellen Kamhi & American Herbalist Guild will focus on Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) a Benedictine Nun who is considered to be the founder of scientific natural history in Germany. Through mystical visions, psychic impressions and observation of nature, she developed a system of natural therapies, using food, gemstones and medicinal herbs. In this group, we will investigate and share her recommendations based on natural evaluations and holistic methods centered on “spiritual healing”, including the application of tinctures, herbs, and precious stones, recognizing that the four elements (fire, air, water, and earth), the four seasons, the four humors, the four zones of the earth, and the four major winds must be kept in balance. We will also review modern Scientific Validation that supports the continued use of Hildegard of Bingen’s methods. This meetup runs from April 19, 2021 to November 15, 2021 starting at 6:30pm EST. However, to move into a more commercial setting, such as health food stores and online retail, there is a vast array of Good Manufacturing Practice and label requirements that must be met and mastered if you are committed to avoiding the very expensive pitfalls of becoming ‘pen pals’ with the FTC and FDA.

In this lecture we will outline definitions of marketing and labeling that is regulated by government organizations in the United States, and specific resources where a manufacturer can access compliance criteria.
